Un achat d’or dans un pays étranger, autre que les membres de l’Union Européenne, est soumis à des droits de douane ainsi qu’au paiement de la TVA française. C’est le cas notamment quand de l’or est commandé via un site internet spécialisé ou acheté sur place, au cours d’un séjour. Le colis correspondant doit ensuite être accompagner d’un formulaire de déclaration de marchandise. Celui-ci sera présenté aux douanes par les services postaux, ainsi que la société de transport international chargé du transit. Les taxes et les frais relatifs à la TVA et aux droits d’entrée de l’or seront ensuite présentés à l’acheteur d’or, soit par courrier quelques jours après la livraison du colis, soit à la date de sa réception. Le droit de douane peut varier entre 2,5 et 4% pour les bijoux en or.
Par conséquent, un investisseur est souvent tenu de payer deux TVA, à moins que la première soit remboursable. Cela peut arriver dans certains pays dans le cas où la marchandise vendue sortirait du territoire de ce même pays. Encore faut-il que le vendeur veuille bien respecter ce point et rester discret à ce sujet.
Outre les taxes douanières, l’acheteur d’or doit également prendre en compte des frais forfaitaires sur les dossiers à réaliser. Tous ces frais doivent être vus de très près pour éviter tout problème de surcoût inattendu. Ils sont forcément plus importants que ceux qu’il faut payer si l’achat ou la vente d’or est effectué sur le marché français ou dans un pays membre de l’Union Européenne. Pourtant, il existe certains cas particuliers.
Ainsi, l'achat de lingot d’or est assez singulier, notamment en Suisse. En effet, dans ce pays, il est possible de trouver des lingots d’or d’un gramme, de 100 grammes ou encore de 500 grammes. Ces mini-lingots sont essentiellement destinés aux petits investisseurs mais aussi à la bijouterie. Certes, ils sont plus accessibles pour les particuliers à petit budget, mais ils ne sont pas commercialisés en France. Par conséquent, ils ne peuvent pas y circuler librement. Si un acheteur d’or désire donc acheter un de ces lingots en Suisse, et l’importer ensuite légalement sur le territoire national, il n’y a pas 36 000 solutions. Mieux vaut privilégier les lingotins de moins de 10 grammes, lesquels peuvent être transformés facilement en pendentifs. Autrement, il faudra faire une déclaration d’importation au risque d’être poursuivi pour fraude ou possession dangereuse. Il faut également savoir que ces types de lingots s’accompagnent d’une TVA à l’importation, comme c’est le cas pour tout or industriel. La fabrication plus soignée des lingots en Suisse peut également constituer une raison qui inciterait une personne à acquérir des lingots dans ce pays plutôt qu’en France. C’est le cas notamment pour les lingots d’un kilogramme.
Ces derniers engendrent un surcoût important au moment de l’importation et, de plus, ne sont pas toujours disponibles immédiatement. Pour que le lingot d’or industriel soit transformé en lingot de bourse, il faut qu’il dispose d’un certificat. Pour cela, il faut qu’il soit refondu, ce qui suppose des frais de fonte mais aussi d’essai.
